Mobile games to outpace consoles?
I-Play's VP of Sales for Europe, Stephane Labrunie, told attendees at the Leipzig Game Developers Conference that the mobile game market will surpass the console game market by the end of the year. His rationale for this claim is that more mobile games will be sold this year than console games, and went on to call mobile games the "true mass market" while calling console games a niche market.
That's splitting the hair a bit finely. Mobile games are cheaper than their console games counterpart and there are more of them, which naturally results in a greater number of SKUs. But the size of a market is based on dollars, not titles, and by that measure the mobile gaming market is still a blip on the videogame radar screen. With the next-gen consoles coming our way, a videogame entertainment revolution is coming that will likely change the nature of entertainment as we know it.
