Non-profit industry trade group the Mobile Marketing Association announced president and CEO Mike Wehrs will resign his post, effective Dec. 31. Wehrs will assume the role of special advisor to the MMA Global Executive Committee through June 30, 2010, with MMA Global chairman Federico Pisani Massamormile serving as interim CEO.

According to the MMA, Wehrs will return to the commercial sector. Prior to landing the MMA position in January of this year, Wehrs served as vice president of industry affairs and evangelism at speech and imaging solutions provider Nuance Communications, supervising the firm's overall mobile business strategy, product strategy, and industry and public policy. The MMA board needs to define its role in the ecosystem, not just hire another lovely Laura - we all do love her - that will give everyone a hug. We keep saying, this is gonna be the year, but it doesn't happen. It's time to grow up.

The board needs to get the right Leadership Team right - and BEFORE the upcoming CTIA and MWC. Otherwise both Largent and Conway are going to sweep in and swamp the association with new initiatives and investment. Folks we've worked too hard to get the MMA moving.

I say
1. hire a savvy, global-minded leader from the GSMA as ceo - they reinvented themselves from 3gsm techno-gweebs to Mobile Leaders and MMA needs a similar make-over
2. hire the top sales exec from CTIA - they absolutely know how to integrate industry thought leaders WITH commercial vendors and MMA is gonna need a deft hand in this economy
3. hire a public policy person from ITU - that organization is drowning itself, but have some people that know how to work with Regulators and the big issues for the next five years is PRIVACY and STANDARDS.
4. hire a community organizer off of a leading business publisher like Forbes or allthingsD - so far no one has really put their best foot forward to mobilise our industry. Major Opportunity.

With that type of leadership team, listening to and guiding a Board composed of senior agency and brand executives, could move the ball forward.
