Mobile web adspend expected to reach $2B a year by 2014
Mobile web adspend will approach $500 million worldwide by the end of 2009 and close in on $2 billion annually by 2014 according to a new forecast issued by Juniper Research, which credits the growth to increasing consumer adoption of mobile Internet services as well as heightened brand engagement with the mobile platform. Juniper notes that with mobile becoming the dominant channel for web access in markets like India and with operators moving away from walled-garden environments, the percentage of web searches occurring on mobile devices continues to grow: "Popular mobile Internet sites are now attracting levels of usage that provide a strong case for advertising and sponsorship options," said report author Dr. Windsor Holden in a prepared statement. "Furthermore, the fact that mobiles are far more personal than home computers--used only by a specific individual--means that brands can build up detailed profiles of user responses and plan follow-up campaigns accordingly."
Juniper expected the total value of adspend on mobile will jump from $1.4 billion in 2009 to $6 billion in 2014, adding mobile web spending will overtake SMS spending for the first time by the end of this year. However, most mobile advertising efforts are still ad hoc, with very few converged campaigns.
