More on China's booming mobile music sector
As reported last week, mobile music is really taking off in China and now The Wall Street Journal has chipped in its two cents. Analysts see even more room for growth. The most popular form of mobile music in China is "color ringback tones." In this rendition of the ringback tone, apparently the caller listens to a downloaded track instead of the sound of ringing, except the caller had downloaded the song himself from the Internet. Traditional ringback tones are provided by the person being called. Wireless music services in the country generated an estimated $247 million in revenue last year, and that's set to expand considerably this year driven mostly by promotions for carriers and investors. Users in China are charged about 12 cents per color ringback tone or downloaded song. That's right, just 12 cents.
