mSpot premieres feature film streaming service
Mobile entertainment firm mSpot announced the debut of mSpot Mobile Movies, a new on-demand streaming video service available across 30 different handsets including the iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile smartphones and multiple higher-end feature phones. According to mSpot, the service--in development for over a year--heralds the first direct-to-consumer expansion of the company's mobile movie offering, first launched three years ago through Sprint and Bell Mobility; it offers access to feature films from Paramount Studios and The Weinstein Company, with a deal with Universal pending. Current titles include The Reader and Zach and Miri Make a Porno.
mSpot Mobile Movies charges consumers $4.99 for individual features--monthly Movie Club subscriptions range from $9.99 to $15.99. mSpot adds the films are instantly available on the phone's web browser, meaning consumers aren't required to wait for download or syncing to a PC. The company also promises the best movie experience on each phone, matching different video encodings to each individual handset and network--it says there are 18 different versions of every title, varying by codex, bitrate and aspect ratio.
