Multitasking, NFC support highlight Samsung's bada 2.0

Samsung outlined the updated version of its bada open mobile platform at a developer day event in South Korea, promising a host of new features including an improved UI, app multitasking, push notifications, Near Field Communications integration and HTML5 web standard support. In addition, bada 2.0 promises programmers a new software development kit, operator billing and expanded revenue model support. MobileCrunch reports that Samsung plans to release at least five handsets running bada 1.1 or 1.2 prior to launching bada 2.0 sometime in mid-2011.

Samsung officially took the wraps off bada in December 2009; bada (translating to "ocean" in Korean) promises an open, feature-rich platform based on the handset maker's TouchWiz user interface. Samsung has so far shipped a number of bada phones, including the Wave II, Wave525, Wave533, Wave575 and Wave723, although the platform has yet to make its way to U.S. users. Earlier this month, Samsung announced it expects to sell roughly 5 million bada-powered phones and notch 50 million bada application downloads by the end of 2010.
