MySpace offers developers new social networking APIs
MySpace announced a suite of new application programming interfaces promising developers the tools to leverage public data for creating software to socialize content on and off the social network's platform. According to MySpace, the APIs will include access to publicly available real-time data including status updates, music, photos and videos, complete with granular filters to control the amount of data seen.
The suite includes:
- Status and Mood Commenting API, enabling third party sites to ingest MySpace status and mood updates and allow comments from those sites. Comments appear back in the user's MySpace activity stream.
- Open Search API, allowing third-party sites to include public MySpace profile information in search results. Search queries can include names, profile types or email addresses, with results filtered by gender, age and location.
- Photo Upload API, simplifying image upload to MySpace from third party sites or MySpace Apps and enabling creation of public or private photo albums.
In addition, MySpace will kick off its MySpace Developer Challenge on Jan. 4, awarding programmers for creative use of the new APIs. Complete details are available here.
