Myxer: More than half of users making purchases via mobile phone

Fifty-three percent of U.S. subscribers visiting Myxer's ad-supported mobile entertainment site have made purchases from their phones, the firm reports. Based on a survey of 2,400 mobile Myxer visitors, 19 percent of users who've conducted mobile transactions purchase between two and five items per month--another 16 percent indicate they make more than 10 purchases every month.

Among Myxer customers who've made purchases via mobile, 31 percent favor the carrier billing option--that number increases to 38 percent among consumers aged 18 to 24. Although 18 percent of Myxer shoppers indicate a preference for credit card billing, 28 percent of consumers between 35 and 54 also favor the credit card option, compared to 23 percent who choose operator billing. In addition, 27 percent of respondents using Android smartphones prefer credit card billing.

Music dominates purchase patterns on mobile, accounting for 68 percent of Myxer purchases. Five percent of users who've made mobile purchases bought physical items for delivery. Given the popularity of digital music, it isn't surprising to note that 37 percent of transactions total less than $5--however, 26 percent of mobile transactions exceed $20.

Thirty-seven percent of all Myxer shoppers cite convenience as the chief appeal of m-commerce, a number that grows to 45 percent among Android users. Price was next among 24 percent of mobile shoppers, with 22 percent chalking up mobile purchases to the "cool factor."

More than 47 million users have now purchased mobile media across the Myxer platform, translating to 2.5 billion downloads. In addition to its mobile website, the firm offers digital merchandise via dedicated iPhone, Android and BlackBerry applications.
