The National Geographic Society announced the launch of National Geographic Mobile, promising photos, videos and related educational programming optimized for wireless devices. Launched via the society's taxable National Geographic Ventures subsidiary, the mobile effort will partner NatGeo with handset makers, aggregators and developers to create videos, games and related properties based on the organization's library of content. A WAP site scheduled to launch in October will offer premium downloads tied to National Geographic publications and television programming, and in addition the society will partner with direct-to-consumer mobile content distribution firm PlayPhone on a subscription-based online service featuring wallpapers, ringtones and related media. National Geographic adds that it will continue to license its library assets to manufacturers, aggregators, developers and carriers.
