Netflix at work on Android streaming video client

Tools

Movie rental and video streaming service provider Netflix is now developing a client for Google's Android mobile operating system as the company continues to expand its platform across connected devices. A Netflix job posting calling for an "Android Video Playback Expert" explains the firm is looking for "a great engineer to help us build Instant Streaming client implementations on Android devices"--ideal candidates will boast expertise on subjects including video container formats and codecs, the intricacies of concurrent programming and implementation of streaming media. Netflix adds that qualified candidates most all bring "a deep understanding of and hands-on experience with media playback on the Android platform," with experience across other mobile app ecosystems and DRM a plus.

Appearing onstage at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced his company will introduce a free iPhone application later this summer. Hastings said that Netflix's streaming video application for Apple's iPad, introduced in early April, is the entertainment app most downloaded by owners of the tablet device. iPad service is included free as part of existing Netflix memberships, promising unlimited viewing as well as catalog browsing and queue management--in addition, viewers can resume watching a title on their iPad wherever they left off on their TV or computer.
