New York Times launches Press Engine mobile content platform

Tools

The New York Times will introduce Press Engine, a new digital platform enabling publishers and media organizations to distribute their content across mobile devices like Apple's iPhone and iPad. Scheduled to launch in Q4 2010, Press Engine promises content providers an expanded subscription model and new advertising opportunities--application templates will include partial offline reading, article saving, sharing functionality, multimedia galleries, horizontal and vertical reading, search tools and device-standard ad units.

The New York Times Company notes the Press Engine business model is designed to give publishers control and own any advertising and subscription revenues on their apps--clients will pay a one-time license fee and monthly maintenance, with the ability to opt in to future upgrades. The Telegraph Media Group and A.H. Belo Corporation-owned Dallas Morning News, Providence Journal and Press-Enterprise are the first publishers to license the Press Engine solution; New York Times Company-owned publications including the International Herald Tribune, Gainesville Sun and Lakeland Ledger will also roll out apps at launch.
