NFL looking to expand its mobile playbook

Tools

The National Football League is looking to the mobile platform as the sport expands its digital media horizons. "We are trying to find more and more ways to offer the games online, and mobile is becoming more and more important," NFL Online general manager Laura Goldberg said in an interview with Beet.TV during the recent NewTeeVee Live event in San Francisco. "You will see the importance of the mobile phone growing."

Sprint's exclusive NFL Mobile Live application currently features live radio broadcasts of every regular-season NFL game from both the home and road teams' flagship stations, a 24/7 live telecast of NFL Network coverage, and live telecasts of all eight NFL Network primetime games as well as on-demand video highlights, real-time text alerts, injury reports and breaking news. According to Sprint, NFL Mobile Live reached the 1 million download milestone quicker than any other application in the operator's history, and drives more usage than any other downloadable app it offers.

In addition, the NFL and broadcast satellite service provider DirecTV offer their complete Sunday Ticket live NFL games package to mobile subscribers. Gridiron fans who pay $280 for the Sunday Ticket package, which offers viewers access to all out-of-market NFL games, can now add the $100 supplementary SuperFan package, which simulcasts live matchups to desktop computers--SuperFan includes the Supercast Mobile application, which expands coverage to devices including Apple's iPhone.
