NFL Mobile Live coming to Palm Pre next month

Tools

Sprint will expand its popular NFL Mobile Live application to the Palm Pre platform in time for the National Football League's 2009-10 preseason, which kicks off Aug. 9 with the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. "NFL Mobile Live will be available by August 1," reads a new Sprint support webpage. "It will be sent to you in an over-the-air software update from Palm. When you accept the update, NFL Mobile Live will be automatically installed. Once it's installed, type NFL on your keyboard from the main screen or the Launcher. Then just tap the NFL icon to open it. NFL Mobile Live will be pre-loaded on any Palm Pre bought after August 1, 2009."

Sprint announced the debut of NFL Mobile Live prior to the 2008-09 football season, initially offering subscribers wireless access live radio broadcasts of all regular season games as well as information on their favorite teams, fantasy updates, player profiles, photos and video highlights. According to Sprint, the NFL Mobile Live app set the company's single-day record for downloads on Sept. 7, the first Sunday of the NFL campaign. In late October, Sprint touted the addition of live NFL game telecasts, becoming the first U.S. mobile operator to offer live National Football League television coverage. Earlier this year, NFL Mobile Live also featured live coverage of the league's annual rookie draft.

In related news, PreCentral reports Palm is poised to release its webOS 1.1 software update for the Pre sometime in the next 30 days. An anonymous tipster notes the update is geared largely to improve the Pre's enterprise chops via features including IT-initiated remote wipe, required PIN with complexity, device wipe after a certain number of failed PIN attempts, auto-lock and improved digital certificates. PreCentral adds that other sources indicate the update will include new Pre applications, although it is unclear whether the apps will originate via Palm or third-party developers.
