Nielsen: U.S. teens lead world in mobile email usage

Tools

Teens in China lead the globe in mobile web access and IM usage, while American youth pull ahead of the pack in mobile email and game downloads, according to a new study issued by The Nielsen Company. Seventy three percent of Chinese users ages 15 to 24 report accessing the mobile web in the last 30 days, compared to 48 percent of U.S. mobile youth and 46 percent of U.K. youth--less than a quarter of young people in other European nations used the mobile web in the previous month, Nielsen adds. About 38 percent of U.S. youth sent and received mobile email in the last month, far outdistancing other international markets--in addition, roughly a quarter of American young people downloaded a mobile game, running neck-and-neck with their Russian counterparts.

Nielsen notes that mobile messaging tends to skew female in most worldwide markets, with a few exceptions--in India, males 15 to 24 are twice as likely as females to send text messages and four times more likely to use photo messaging. In the U.S., female respondents between 15 and 24 account for 55 percent of texting and 59 percent of photo messaging.
