Nokia adds check-ins with Ovi Maps v3.06
Nokia (NYSE:NOK) issued version v.306 of its free Ovi Maps turn-by-turn navigation solution, mirroring location-based social networking services like Facebook Places, foursquare and Gowalla with the introduction of real-world check-ins. Ovi Maps users can now check in to share their present whereabouts and goings-on with contacts across multiple social networks as well as retrace their steps via check-in histories. Also new in Ovi Maps v3.06: Pinch-to-zoom interaction (exclusive to Symbian^3 devices), refreshed main menu and icons, public transportation information spanning over 80 international cities, upgraded search tools, live traffic flow updates and place pages with descriptions, reviews and photos spotlighting local points of interest.
Nokia introduced the revamped Ovi Maps in January 2010--the service now offers drive or walk navigation tools covering 78 countries worldwide. Earlier this week, the handset maker said it will make over its Ovi Store content marketplace to incorporate a new look and feel promising a more integrated user experience. According to Nokia, the upgraded Ovi Store will simplify and accelerate application search and discovery--the store also will introduce in-app purchases, enabling developers to deliver expanded pricing options like subscription models, micro-transactions and 'try and buy' offers giving consumers the flexibility to download a free, lite version of an application for subsequent upgrade to a more feature-rich premium edition.
