Nokia forges Chinese mobile services JV with New Alliance
Nokia announced an agreement with investment company New Alliance (a unit of the Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd.) to form a 50/50 joint venture focused on offering a range of mobile services to the sprawling Chinese subscriber market, complete with support for local software developers. Dubbed Nokia Alliance Internet Services Company Limited, the JV will launch in January 2010, with about 80 employees--Nokia offered few additional specifics on the initiative, although in a statement, the handset giant's executive vice president of services Niklas Savander indicated the venture will emphasize "locally relevant" mobile services for the Chinese market.
