Nokia introduces mobile TV receiver add-on
Nokia (NYSE:NOK) unveiled a new mobile TV receiver add-on, enabling consumers to tune into DVB-H-based digital broadcast content wherever available. The Nokia Mobile TV Headset operates independent of 3G or WiFi connections, with keys for changing the handset's channels and music controls--the headset also handles call reception and volume to ensure that consumers don't miss incoming calls while immersed in their favorite program. Nokia also offers a Mobile TV application that is pre-installed on selected devices and available for download via the Ovi Store.
The Nokia Mobile TV Headset is priced at €40 (about $51 in the U.S.) and is expected to debut in Q4, optimized for the forthcoming Nokia N8 and other Symbian^3 devices boasting the USB-on-the-go feature. Nokia cautions that DVB-H coverage remains patchy in many regions, noting that licensing snafus and a lack of frequency availability have halted many buildouts. The handset maker adds that there are working services in the Netherlands, Russia and Finland, but suggests consumers check with local dealers before purchasing the headset.
