Nokia launches Skype for Symbian
Nokia announced the introduction of Skype for Symbian, enabling smartphone users to make free Skype-to-Skype calls with other users across the globe. The free application, available now via Nokia's Ovi Store mobile content shop, also offers instant messaging, SMS, and photo and video sharing services--in addition, users can receive calls to their existing online Skype number, see when contacts are online and available to call or IM, and efficiently import names and numbers from the handset's address book. Skype for Symbian will run on any Nokia smartphone using Symbian^1--Skype also plans to expand the client to Symbian-based devices from rival manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson.
In related Ovi Store news, MobileCrunch reports that each registered user has downloaded an average of 12 apps since Nokia opened the storefront in May 2009--user registrations and downloaded doubled in February over January totals, with total content downloads now averaging 22 per second worldwide. More than 100 Nokia handsets now support Ovi Store downloads.
