Nokia teams with Alpine to bring Ovi apps to in-car systems
Automotive systems and audio firm Alpine Electronics announced a strategic partnership with Nokia to bring the handset giant's Ovi smartphone applications and content to in-car infotainment systems. Per terms of the agreement, Alpine's new Terminal Mode connected technology solution will transmit software from smartphones to the high-resolution screens and audio systems already embedded in the vehicle, enabling delivery of widget-based services like navigation, music, weather reports and application stores alongside traditional voice communications. According to Alpine, Terminal Mode was developed in cooperation with the Consumer Electronics for Automotive mobile device interface standardization effort--the connection from the mobile device to the infotainment system is made either via Bluetooth or USB cable, depending on the length of the journey.
Nokia will supply services including its turn-by-turn Ovi Maps navigation application. Alpine adds that connectivity between the smartphone and the car can also enable GPS information to interface with information like fuel levels and engine status, enabling location-based services to identify the nearest gas station, spotlight the lowest gas price or deliver service station coupons. Terminal Mode can also support safety features, e.g. warning drivers to slow down.
