Tools

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) announced it will partner with music intelligence platform The Echo Nest for MixRadio, a personalized streaming music service the manufacturer will pre-install on the Lumia 800 smartphone, one of its first two devices running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7.5 operating system.

According to Nokia, MixRadio (integrated into the Nokia Music app) leverages a lightweight browser app to analyze the user's existing digital music library, building a Taste Profile and generating custom streaming radio stations drawing on an archive of more than 15 million songs. Consumers can also create personalized stations based on any recording artist or song.

Nokia Music additionally includes approximately 100 stations programmed by music experts and influencers--Lumia 800 owners can stream any station on-demand or download about 15 hours of content onto their smartphone for offline playback. Also integrated into Nokia Music: An MP3 storefront and live concert recommendations.

Nokia unveiled the Lumia 800 and sibling Lumia 710 in late October. The smartphones be available later this month in November across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the U.K., with support from 31 operators and retail partners. Both devices will be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan by year's end. Nokia has not yet announced any specific products for the U.S. market, but CEO Stephen Elop said a portfolio of devices will be coming in early 2012.
