Nokia's Ovi Store downloads top 1.7 million per day
Despite a disastrous second quarter marked by a 40 percent net profit decline, Nokia (NYSE:NOK) continues to grow its Ovi Store content marketplace, with downloads now averaging more than 1.7 million a day. Nokia issued Ovi Store 1.7 during Q2, promising improved browsing and search, and reports its most popular devices now offer consumers access to more than 13,000 content items, including applications--Ovi App Wizard, a do-it-yourself software creation tool unveiled in early May, has already racked up a million downloads in the 10 weeks since it launched. Nokia adds that 90 percent of consumers who can access Ovi Store may now do so in their native tongue, adding that 80 percent of users with local language availability can also purchase content from Ovi Store in their local currency.
Nokia also continues to drive demand for its free Ovi Maps turn-by-turn navigation service, with downloads exceeding 17 million at the end of Q2. In addition, Nokia now offers Ovi Maps embedded across all of its GPS-enabled smartphones. Ovi Maps went live in January 2010, and is now available across more than 70 countries and in 45 languages.
