NTT DoCoMo acquires $45.5 million stake in PacketVideo

Japanese mobile operator giant NTT DoCoMo announced the completion of an agreement to acquire a 35 percent stake in San Diego-based digital multimedia solutions provider PacketVideo valued at $45.5 million. According to DoCoMo, its partnership with PacketVideo (a unit of NextWave Wireless) dates back to 1998--PacketVideo's pvPlayer multimedia player is installed in more than 90 DoCoMo handset models. The carrier notes the new strategic alliance will enhance its music and video service offerings while augmenting the competitiveness of both companies--in addition, DoCoMo and PacketVideo indicate they will jointly develop new technologies and advanced mobile applications.
