NTT DoCoMo does multimedia development deals
Japan's largest mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, will partner with other media giants including Fuji Television Network, Nippon Broadcasting System and satellite broadcaster Sky Perfect Communications in a joint venture to develop new mobile multimedia services. The group will also promote its own mobile digital broadcast standard and will lobby Japan's Communications Ministry to reallocate spectrum for mobile media when the nation's terrestrial broadcasting services go all-digital in 2011, freeing up significant bandwidth resources in the process.
In additional DoCoMo news, the carrier announced it will acquire a 37.8 percent stake in Kadokawa Group Holdings, parent company of the Kadokawa media group. The deal is valued at Y4 billion, or $34.5 billion U.S. DoCoMo and Kadokawa will develop books, comics and films for the carrier's mobile content deck.
