Nvidia, Sony team to bring PlayStation games to Android devices
Visual computing technologies developer Nvidia will partner with Sony Computer Entertainment to translate PlayStation gaming experiences to mobile devices running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating system. Sony introduced its PlayStation Suite initiative in January, announcing plans to roll out Android 2.3-optimized editions of signature PlayStation properties, beginning with titles dating back to the 1994 release of the PS1 console. According to a post on Nvidia's new Tegra Zone Android application, it will collaborate with Sony to bring PlayStation games to Android smartphones and tablets integrating the new Tegra 2 mobile superchip, which employs a dual-core central processing unit to deliver faster mobile web browsing, hardware accelerated Flash and console-quality gaming with an ultra-low power GeForce graphics processing unit.
In tandem with the PlayStation Suite launch, Sony plans to provide a new game development environment to accelerate the creation of new PS Suite content, promising programmers and publishers opportunities to further expand their efforts across a host of portable devices. In addition, Sony will roll out a PlayStation Certified license program for hardware manufacturers, promising software development support and logo licensing to guarantee quality gameplay experiences across the Android device ecosystem.
Sony stated that newly developed titles supporting PlayStation Suite also will be available across the NGP, the electronics giant's forthcoming portable entertainment device. Slated to hit retail at the end of 2011, the touchscreen NGP unit features a multi-player environment dubbed LiveArea as well as Near, a location-based application that identifies fellow gamers within a user's immediate vicinity.
