O2: iPhone sales brisk in weekend debut

Tools

British operator O2 sold hundreds of thousands of Apple iPhones in the weekend following the device's overseas debut, according to Peter Erskine, CEO of the carrier's parent firm Telefonica. O2 and retail partner Carphone Warehouse began selling the iPhone Friday evening--Erskine declined to cite specific sales figures, but said during a conference call that numbers are in line with initial expectations. "Around two-thirds of iPhone customers are new to O2 and [retail] footfall has been better than expected," he said. Erskine added that O2 added 1,400 retail staffers in advance of the iPhone's debut.
