Ofcom auctioning spectrum for new mobile services

Britain's communications regulation bureau Ofcom announced proposals for what it calls the U.K.'s largest single release of radio spectrum, making available 215 MHz of spectrum in three bands that could be used for new mobile multimedia services including mobile TV. Ofcom will release the spectrum through two separate auctions: The 2500-2690 MHz and 2010-2025 MHz bands will be packaged into a number of lots and auctioned together online, while the 2290-2300 MHz bands will be packaged as a single lot and auctioned though a sealed bid process.

According to Ofcom, the proposals are part of a larger program that will result in the release of about 400 MHz of spectrum over the next several years. Consultation for the current spectrum release initiative ends March 9, 2007.
