Omnifone premieres MusicStation subscription service
News out of the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona: British mobile music firm Omnifone announced MusicStation, a new all-you-can-eat download service promising subscribers access to more than 1 million songs for £1.99 a week. Positioning the service as a rival to Apple's iTunes digital storefront and its coming iPhone multimedia device, Omnifone said MusicStation will instead operate across any existing music-capable handset--users may search, download and play music on their phones, and synchronize with their PCs to create playlists to share with other subscribers.
MusicStation is set to debut in Europe and Asia this year--according to Omnifone, it has already signed partnerships with 23 mobile operators, including Norway's Telenor ASA and South Africa's Vodacom. Content partners include Universal Music Group: "(It is) one of the most consumer friendly and secure platforms we have seen," Universal Music senior VP of digital Rob Wells said in a prepared statement. "The worldwide potential of the MusicStation platform and its ability to make music instantly accessible to consumers via their mobile phone is enormous."

I got to try this app out and I loved it. I never liked the silly wheel interface on the iPod cuz my hands are too big and cramped with the i
Pod. My iPod sits in a drawer with 20GB of archive. What I figured out is that I like searching from the phone wherever I am instead of being tied to a PC. My old music is still there at home on CD and LP, but when I'm out of the house I like surfing new stuff.
