OMVC completes mobile DTV trials
Broadcasting industry association the Open Mobile Video Coalition announced completion of its mobile digital TV technical trials and evaluations, and will submit its findings to the Advanced Television Systems Committee standards organization. The OMVC, which represents over 850 commercial and public TV stations, conducted the mobile DTV trials in cooperation with engineers from the non-profit Association for Maximum Service Television trade organization, collecting more than 140 hours and 1,000 miles of mobile data during three-month trials in the San Francisco and Las Vegas markets. According to the OMVC, the trials demonstrated full-motion mobile DTV at pedestrian and highway speeds, confirming reception as far as 40 miles from the transmitter; in addition, mobile DTV does not interfere with established FCC-compliant primary digital television broadcasts. The OMVC recommends that the ATSC establish an open mobile DTV standard in time for February 2009's federally-mandated digital broadcast transition.
