One in 10 online shoppers makes purchases via mobile
One in 10 online consumers said they make purchases via mobile device, 16 percent compare prices and another 16 percent research product details and specifications, according to a new consumer survey from global credit information group Experian's PriceGrabber.com unit. Experian reports that among the 3,305 U.S. online consumers queried in March 2009, nearly 58 percent own a web-enabled mobile phone, with 8 percent of them owning iPhones; in addition, 8 percent of online consumers purchased their first web-enabled handset in the first quarter of 2009. Among online consumers making purchases from their mobile devices, 58 percent have purchased digital content for their phone, 51 percent have purchased consumer electronics, 37 percent have purchased computers, 36 percent have purchased books and 31 percent have purchased clothing.
Experian adds that 56 percent of iPhone owners are comparing prices on their phones, compared to 28 percent of total smartphone owners. Twenty seven percent of iPhone owners and 35 percent of smartphone owners anticipate they will be comparing prices within two years.
