Openwave unveils Location Express

Tools

Mobile software applications and infrastructure provider Openwave Systems announced the launch of Openwave Location Express, promising an easy-to-deploy, location-based infrastructure appliance enabling operators in emerging markets to accelerate their entry into the location-based services sector. Supporting both basic and advanced location-based services and compatible with GSM/UMTS standards, Location Express exploits Cell/Sector ID position information to offer low-cost services to a variety of subscriber segments and prepaid users with entry-level voice and SMS capable handsets. Openwave adds the solution can also enable basic enterprise fleet tracking applications satisfied by Cell ID level accuracy.

According to Openwave, Location Express utilizes standard OpenLS and Mobile Location Protocol to guarantee support for a range of location applications--it authenticates and authorizes location requests while addressing privacy issues, extending users control over how their personal information is used. Subscribers can also self-provision access privileges for applications requesting their position, and specify temporal filters that only allow applications to obtain position information during a specified time period--e.g., during work hours. Openwave Location Express will be officially released in July.
