Opera developing web browser for Android devices
Web browser development firm Opera Software confirms it is expanding its Opera Mobile 9.7 solution to the Android smartphone OS. "Yes, we are working on an Android version," Opera CEO Jon von Tetzcher tells PCMag.com, although he did not offer a timetable for the browser's release. While the Opera Mobile 9.7 browser is already optimized for Windows Mobile and Symbian smartphones, Android and BlackBerry smartphone users are limited to the Opera Mini browser--while Opera Mobile 9.7 renders HTML pages and supports widgets, Opera Mini reformats webpages through Opera's servers for mobile-friendly presentation.
Opera Mini browser users viewed more than 10.4 billion mobile web pages in June according to the firm's most recent State of the Mobile Web report, signaling the first time Opera Mini topped the 10 billion pageview mark in a single month. Opera Mini servers are now processing more than 346 million pages each day. Nokia devices remain responsible for the majority of Opera Mini activity worldwide, followed by Sony Ericsson--in the U.S., a majority of Opera Mini pageviews are generated via BlackBerry and Samsung handsets.
