PacketVideo debuts Twonky media sharing app for Android

Tools

Multimedia software provider PacketVideo unveiled Twonky Mobile, a new application enabling Android smartphone users to stream personal and online media directly from their phone to any web-connected device, sans traditional cables or tethering. According to PacketVideo, Twonky leverages patent-pending Beaming technology to wirelessly connect phones with PCs, TVs and stereos--the solution remembers preferences for each network the user connects to, identifying whether it's a home or work network as well as noting which devices are most often used, what media is commonly viewed and other sharing preferences. In addition, Twonky boasts auto-copy features allowing users to automatically transfer content from the handset to a PC or Mac. Twonky Mobile for Android is currently available as a free download, but PacketVideo will move to a $2.99 price point in January 2011.

The Twonky launch follows about two months after technology firm NextWave Wireless agreed to sell its remaining 65 percent equity interest in PacketVideo to Japanese operator giant NTT DoCoMo for $111.6 million. NTT DoCoMo acquired a 35 percent stake in PacketVideo in July 2009 for $45.5 million--with the recent completion of the transaction, PacketVideo is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the carrier. Twonky follows on DoCoMo's post-acquisition promise to create synergies with PacketVideo for enhanced media services, including new connected solutions enabling consumers to link their mobile handsets with home electronic devices to remotely enjoy and share content.
