Palm issues webOS 1.4.5 update for Pre and Pixi
Palm is pushing out its webOS 1.4.5 software update to Pre and Pixi smartphones, highlighted by final support of applications created via the webOS Plug-In Development Kit, a set of tools, documentation and APIs enabling developers to more easily integrate C and C++ code. Rolling out now across operators including Sprint and French carrier SFR, with Verizon Wireless slated to follow in the near future, webOS 1.4.5 also addresses multiple security issues and corrects problems related to text entry and podcast downloads.
Hewlett-Packard completed its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm last week. The device maker first introduced the webOS PDK beta late last year--the toolkit enables development of advanced applications including 3D games. In early January, Palm App Catalog introduced a series of 3D titles including EA Mobile's Need for Speed Undercover, The Sims 3 and Monopoly, Gameloft's Asphalt 5: Elite Racing and Let's Golf!, Glu Mobile's Glyder 2 and Laminar Research's X-Plane; the publishers in question were all given early access to the PDK.
