Peek unveils dedicated Twitter device
Mobile messaging device manufacturer Peek announced the launch of TwitterPeek, a dedicated Twitter device promising users unlimited tweets and direct messages, complete with always-on instant tweet delivery and no-contract nationwide wireless coverage. Available exclusively from online retailer Amazon.com, TwitterPeek boasts a full qwerty keyboard, large color screen and click scroll wheel--according to Peek, consumers can purchase six months of service for $99.99, or opt for the $199.99 lifetime service plan.
Twitter passed the 5 billion tweet threshold in mid-October--the microblogging service currently boasts about 54 million users worldwide, and is valued at about $1 billion despite the absence of a discernible revenue model. In a recent interview, Twitter CEO Evan Williams said the company is convinced that mobile devices represent the future of the service: "The best business models come from where people can create the most value. I think Twitter can create the most value on mobile phones, because it is more immediate," Williams said. "Most people cannot live without their mobile phones over their PCs and we believe we can enhance people's lives on the move."
