Qualcomm co-stars with Creative Artists Agency on mobile apps venture

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) will partner with influential Hollywood talent broker Creative Artists Agency to launch Creative Mobile Labs, a joint venture to build mobile applications developed in conjunction with CAA-represented clients. The Los Angeles-based Creative Mobile Labs will pair writers, directors, graphics artists and other creative forces with mobile software developers affiliated with the Qualcomm Services Labs effort. CAA head of business development Michael Yanover told TechCrunch that Creative Mobile Labs will eschew the familiar movie franchise applications and musician-branded apps most closely associated with entertainment-themed mobile efforts: We really want to dispel the notion that these apps are celebrity driven or simply meant as companions to existing products. We want to create new apps, new franchises."

Headed by general manager Isaac Babbs, the Qualcomm Services Labs subsidiary launched in August 2010 to foster new solutions and applications. In addition, the unit was created to form new businesses that will also strategically build out Qualcomm's chip business. "We are a microcosm in Qualcomm around innovation," Babbs told FierceMobileContent last year. "We are trying to create businesses around focus areas that we think are going to be big. And we are trying to bring a Qualcomm uniqueness to it."
