Qualcomm launches Skifta streaming media app for Android

Qualcomm's (NASDAQ:QCOM) Atheros networking and connectivity subsidiary unveiled Skifta, a new application enabling Android smartphone and tablet users to access their music, videos and photos from wherever their media resides, whether it's their home or the cloud.

The Skifta media control solution touts Wi-Fi support for home access and 3G support for on-the-go access, as well as a desktop media server plug-in for Mac, Windows and Linux. The application enables consumers to stream personal content stored on their Android smartphone or tablet to millions of Digital Living Network Alliance and Universal Plug and Play devices including TVs, IP-connected stereos, game consoles and PCs--after selecting a photo, song or video, users can share the content to any compliant device using Skifta, with no wires, downloading or sideloading necessary.

Skifta features the Channel library, which allows users to more efficiently access media from the cloud without relying on multiple applications. Skifta Channels also promise immediate access to Facebook Photos, Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket, Soma.fm, Napster, ShoutCast, Revision 3, TED Talks and other media services.

Skifta 1.0 for Android is free to download from Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Market and is available for smartphones and tablets running Android 2.2 or higher. The Skifta desktop application is available for download from the Skifta website.
