Qualcomm launches Snapdragon GameCommand for Android
Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) unveiled Snapdragon GameCommand, a new application promising Android device users easier access to their favorite mobile games.
Snapdragon GameCommand expands on the Snapdragon GamePack collection, introduced by Qualcomm in mid-2011. GamePack features more than 100 mobile titles from developers including Electronic Arts, Glu Mobile, Digital Chocolate, PopCap Games, Booyah and Gameloft, all designed to leverage the advanced graphics capabilities of the Adreno GPUs embedded in Snapdragon mobile processors. GameCommand enables consumers to keep and access their favorite GamePack titles in a single destination with one group icon--the app also touts the latest gaming headlines from notable gaming news sites.
Qualcomm also announced a series of new GamePack titles, including several exclusive additions. The games include Tripwire Interactive's The Ball, Khaeon Gamestudio's Fight Game Heroes and Namco Bandai's 30th anniversary special edition of the arcade classic Galaga. Both the extended Snapdragon GamePack and the GameCommand app are all expected to reach Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Market in early 2012.
Titles developed for Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS now account for 58 percent of all portable gaming revenues in the U.S., surpassing the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS platforms, according to data published last week by mobile app analytics firm Flurry. Two years ago, iOS and Android titles combined accounted for just 19 percent of the U.S. portable game market. Portable game revenues across both the smartphone and handheld platforms will reach $3.3 billion in 2011, Flurry estimates.
