Qualcomm: Mobile gaming may surpass consoles
Qualcomm's gaming group director Mike Yuen acknowledges the challenges facing the mobile gaming sector: platform fragmentation, porting costs, content discovery, accurate sell-through data and general consumer awareness. But Yuen says he's not the only one acknowledging these challenges, and the mobile gaming industry is working hard to overcome them--so much so that the platform "may very well exceed the console/PC market someday."
Screen Digest predicts $767 million in revenue for the North American mobile gaming market this year and Informa predicts the figure to surpass $11 billion by 2010. Yuen says the recent chatter about flat-lining revenues and low adoption rates is pessimistic considering the tremendous opportunity to create awareness among new consumers that don't realize they're holding a game-capable device.
