RealNetworks updates Helix Platform for mobile video

Digital entertainment services firm RealNetworks released a new version of its Helix Media Delivery Platform, promising operators tools to more efficiently build, roll out and monetize mobile TV services. According to RealNetworks, the Helix Platform features enhanced monitoring and control for both live and on-demand video, enabling operators to better manage their network for on- and off-deck video--live rate adaptation ensures video quality across both live events and on-demand content, and play-list creation functionality provides carriers ad-insertion capabilities while offering operators and subscribers the tools to create custom video channels that imitate linear programming.

RealNetworks notes that the Helix Platform enables delivery of video to any 3G/4G enabled device, including the iPhone. In partner trials, the platform successfully supported live sports events, news and user-generated content to tens of thousands of concurrent subscribers using 3GPP-compliant devices.
