Report: 74% of mobile app downloaders use Android or iOS

According to a new report from Nielsen, 36 percent of U.S. mobile consumers now own smartphones. Further, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platforms dominate the market, and combined the platforms make up 74 percent of mobile app downloaders.

iPhone users download the most applications, with users averaging 48 apps, followed by Android (35), Palm OS (21), Windows Mobile (17), Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM)'s BlackBerry (15) and downloaders using another operating system (18). App downloads have increased since Nielsen's report from last year, where the average number of downloads for smartphone users was 22.

According to Nielsen, iPhone and Android app users also use their apps more frequently than other smartphone users. Around 68 percent of iPhone app users and 60 percent of Android app users used their apps multiple times per day. Only 45 percent of BlackBerry app users reported using apps multiple times a day. Windows Mobile showed the lowest frequency of app usage with only 29 percent using apps multiple times a day.
