Report: Apple's iOS 5 on hold until fall 2011

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) said Monday it will mount its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on June 6, with Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller promising the company will "unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS." But don't necessarily expect the release of iOS version 5: Citing two solid sources, TechCrunch reports Apple plans to delay the official launch of its latest iOS revamp until this fall, at which time the company will roll out a substantial operating system makeover incorporating multiple cloud-based services.

The new services are expected to include a "digital locker" solution enabling consumers to store their iTunes music, movie and television libraries on Apple services for access multiple iOS-based devices. Another, according to TechCrunch: A location-enabled friends and family finder tool. In addition, iOS 5 is expected to herald the release of a new version of Apple's iPad tablet.

The report adds that the impact of iOS 5's autumn release on the iPhone is unclear. Apple typically releases both the new iPhone and its accompanying iOS revamp during the summer months.
