Report: Europeans just want messaging
According to a recent report from JupiterResearch, about 68 percent of European consumers are not interested in paying for any data services outside text and picture messaging. An unsurprising 79 percent of users have used SMS, while MMS still trails with a mere 28 percent adoption rate. Only 8 percent of mobile users in Europe watch mobile videos and only 15 percent are interested in ringtones, wallpaper and other personalization content. Jupiter says a lack of suitable handsets does not explain the lack of enthusiasm, since phones with Internet access have hit the market and use of those services has not increased.
First off, 68 percent of Europeans not showing enthusiasm for mobile TV and other mobile content services is not unsurprising, but can we assume 32 percent of respondents are enthusiastic? That's not small potatoes. And comparing a lack of interest in the mobile Internet to a lack of interest in mobile TV is dubious. There are still plenty of television viewers who rarely use the Internet.
