Report: LG, Samsung lead on mobile multimedia
Consumer research firm Parks Associates says LG and Samsung lead the U.S. handset market for advanced mobile entertainment features. According to its new report, "Mobile Entertainment Platforms and Services," 12 percent of LG owners cite mobile TV features on their phones, closely followed by Samsung at 11 percent.
"South Korea leads the world in adoption of mobile entertainment features and services," said Yuanzhe (Michael) Cai Parks, director of broadband and gaming for Parks Associates. "Korean phone manufacturers have been able to take that experience and translate it into success in the American market, balancing good designs and advanced feature sets with reasonable costs."
While Motorola trailed at 8 percent, zero percent of Nokia owners reported advanced multimedia features on their handsets. According to Parks Associates, only 6 percent of all Nokia devices support purchases of music downloads, compared with 22 percent of LG models and 20 percent of Motorola devices. "Nokia needs to introduce more advanced phone models if it is to succeed in the high-end and midrange markets," Cai said. "The challenge is even more acute now that the Apple iPhone is stirring up competition in the premium handset market."
