Report: Mobile entertainment revenues to double by 2011

Tools

A new report issued by market research firm Informa Telecoms & Media forecasts the mobile entertainment market will more than double in the next five years, generating $38.1 billion worldwide in 2011 in comparison to the $18.8 billion in revenue earned in 2006. Music and graphics accounted for 64 percent of the mobile entertainment market over the previous 12 months, and while Informa says music services will continue to grow, wallpapers and avatars will recede as broadcast TV and 3D games come to represent close to half of wireless content revenues five years from now.

"Although music services such as ringtones, full track downloads and ringback tones will continue to generate the highest proportion of revenues seen in the mobile entertainment industry, mobile TV service revenue are set to skyrocket over the next five years, growing from US $178 million to more than US $1.8 billion in 2011," Informa senior analyst Daniel Winterbottom said in a prepared statement. "Large sporting events are seeing more and more people take out subscription packages with their operators that allow them to watch TV services on the move, and this is reflected by the phenomenal growth this segment will see."
