Report: Mobile shopping will balloon to $119B by 2015

Tools

The mobile commerce market will grow to $119 billion in 2015, representing 8 percent of the total e-commerce market, according to a new report from ABI Research. Mobile shopping will grow from $396 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion in 2009 in the United States alone, ABI forecasts. However, that number is puny compared to the mobile shopping market in Japan, which tops $10 billion. The European market is expected to outgrow the U.S. market by the end of this year.

Increased smartphone adoption as well as the growth of mobile commerce websites has been key to U.S. market's growth, the research firm found. Mobile commerce will continue to grow in many emerging markets, ABI said, because mobile Internet access is often the only web access available.

The growth in the mobile commerce market should come as no surprise to those who have been watching the trends. According to a report released in January by Motorola, 51 percent of subscribers across 11 international markets used their mobile phones for in-store activities like comparison shopping, product information and coupons during the 2009 holiday season. After Black Friday this past November, PayPal said mobile online payments were up nearly 650 percent year-over-year.
