Report: More operators banking on mobile TV
A new report issued by market analysis firm Infonetics Research says that 65 percent of mobile and wireless broadband service providers in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific cite competition and subscriber churn as their most significant operational challenges, prompting a majority of operators to focus on new services rather than engage in pricing battles. According to Infonetics, 75 percent of respondents plan to offer mobile video and TV services by 2008, more than doubling the number of providers currently delivering the services--while 43 percent of operators currently employ a content aggregator for mobile video services, the number will grow to 56 percent by 2008.
"Beyond basic voice and access services, mobile and wireless operators are focusing on increasingly popular mobile TV and interactive video services like chat and blogging," said Infonetics Research directing analyst Richard Webb in a prepared statement. "Video-based services represent a golden opportunity for operators to diversify their offerings and boost ARPU, but new media services present business model issues as well as technical challenges like streaming and download capabilities."
