Revamped LG Application Store adding Android by year's end
LG Electronics opened its refurbished LG Application Store in 23 international markets, promising to expand operations across 10 additional countries by the end of 2010. According to the device manufacturer, the LG Application Store now boasts more than 3,000 applications, roughly half of them optimized for feature phones--in addition to its current catalog of Windows OS-based apps, the storefront will add software created for Android smartphones by year's end, with plans to exceed the 4,000 app benchmark by that time. LG did not specify when or even if the storefront will go live in the U.S.
The LG Application Store first opened in beta in July 2009, featuring 1,400 apps at launch. At that time, LG stated the store does not represent a new or separate business model, instead positioning the effort as a value-added service integrated with its device portfolio. The company also promised to collaborate with content providers on a rigorous quality testing program to guarantee all apps are bug-free prior to making them available for download.
