Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) has acquired cross-platform mobile social gaming solutions provider Scoreloop. Financial terms were not disclosed. According to RIM, the Scoreloop staff will join the BlackBerry Developer team, where it will create social and collaborative gaming toolkits optimized for the BlackBerry platform--on the Scoreloop homepage, CEO Marc Gumpinger adds "We'll continue our cross-platform approach, but you'll see that our BlackBerry solution will be unparalleled."

Scoreloop's social gaming ecosystem and SDK provide developers with customizable tools to build iOS and Android titles incorporating monetization options like in-app purchases and virtual currency. The firm also offers 24/7 developer support. Games built using the Scoreloop SDK include Magma Mobile's Push Roll, Off Center Software's Toobz, Konami's PES 2011: Pro Evolution Soccer and Spooky House Studios' Doodle Train.

The Scoreloop acquisition follows the introduction of RIM's BBM Social Platform, which enables developers to leverage the social discovery and sharing elements of its popular BlackBerry Messenger service, which boasts an active userbase of 28 million.

According to RIM, Java developers can access APIs and features to build permission-based features that expand the BBM user experience beyond messaging and chat tools to encompass multimedia, gaming, location-based services, VoIP, video and commerce solutions.
