RIM debuts free BlackBerry Protect data security solution
Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) launched BlackBerry Protect, a free solution extending enterprise data security capabilities like backup, restore and wipe to the consumer segment. While not offering all the same functions available to corporate users connected to RIM's BlackBerry Enterprise Server, BlackBerry Protect promises BlackBerry Internet Service users new safeguards in the event their device is lost--consumers can now locate their phone on a map via GPS, activate a loud ring to uncover its whereabouts, lock down the device in the event of theft and perform a remote data wipe. Users can also encrypt and restore data to new devices, giving consumers the flexibility to manage as many as five BlackBerry devices with one Protect.
According to RIM, BlackBerry Protect services are available now on 8000 and 9000 series devices running BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher. The handset maker said it expects all new BlackBerry handsets shipping by the winter season to preload the Protect solution.
