RIM extends BlackBerry push to real-time content

Tools

Device manufacturer Research In Motion announced the availability of a new push application programming interface enabling developers to push real-time content to BlackBerry smartphones. According to RIM, the enhancement extends its existing push technology from the enterprise into the consumer space, offering programmers the tools to deliver data to BlackBerry devices as it becomes available--benefits include improved content relevance and immediacy, prolonged battery life and minimized data usage by eliminating the need for "poking" and "polling" servers.

The new BlackBerry push API enables developers to push content as well as alerts--RIM notes the service is ideal for mobile applications that emphasize real-time content and updates, like news, weather, banking, medical, IT services applications and games. The company adds that a number of organizations are already developing applications based on the API, among them DevelopIQ, Handmark, Salespace and Polar Mobile.
